DES FE Workshop at FNAL December 14-15, 2005 Vaidas Simaitis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 1 DHE Crate Design and Status The mechanical design is ~95% completed. ~5% = finalize mounting to telescope. For the prototype, we are ignoring telescope requirements for cooling water, temperature monitoring, and other instrumentation. Most prototype manufactured parts are out for quote. Most prototype purchased parts are on hand.

DES FE Workshop at FNAL December 14-15, 2005 Vaidas Simaitis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 2 6-SLOT + 4-SLOT Crate Schroff Card Guides and Rails are on hand. 4-slot backplane is on hand, 6-slot on order Chassis plate designs finished, drawings out for quote.

DES FE Workshop at FNAL December 14-15, 2005 Vaidas Simaitis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 3 HEAT EXCHANGERS & FANS 2 Fan Manifold and 2 Cooling Manifold drawings out for quote 2 fans on hand from early Monsoon design 1 heat exchanger on hand, 1 on back order

DES FE Workshop at FNAL December 14-15, 2005 Vaidas Simaitis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 4 MAIN MANIFOLDS 2 Main manifold drawings out for quote Heat sink extrusion just arrived. 2 Thermo- electric coolers (TEC) not yet ordered.

DES FE Workshop at FNAL December 14-15, 2005 Vaidas Simaitis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 5 POWER SUPPLIES 2 Power Supply Mount drawings out for quote 2 Power Supplies to be ordered by Todd

DES FE Workshop at FNAL December 14-15, 2005 Vaidas Simaitis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 6 POWER SUPPLY MANIFOLDS 2 power supply manifold drawings out for quote 2 delrin crate mounting bars on hold until mounting design is done (not shown)

DES FE Workshop at FNAL December 14-15, 2005 Vaidas Simaitis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 7 PROTOTYPE ASSEMBLY Expect to receive chassis and manifolds by the end of January Assemble prototype, without heat shields If assembly is OK, order heat shields Order TEC’s, and TEC mounts Test air flow and heating and cooling through February Install TEC’s and heat shields

DES FE Workshop at FNAL December 14-15, 2005 Vaidas Simaitis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 11 MOUNTING PIVOTS NORMAL LOCKED POSITION EXTENDED POSITION PIVOT LOCK

DES FE Workshop at FNAL December 14-15, 2005 Vaidas Simaitis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 12 Why PIVOTS ? Allow some FLEXIBILITY to avoid possible obstructions, for extraction or insertion of front modules or transition cards. PIVOTS allow either end to be angled out, and are locked in position for SAFE access. Little extra $$ for a lot of SAFETY! Final design is on hold until mounting method and position is OK’ed by FNAL

DES FE Workshop at FNAL December 14-15, 2005 Vaidas Simaitis, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 16 DESIGN DETAILS Our design resides in much detail at our UIUC website at CLICK HERE or copy and paste:CLICK HERE web.hep.uiuc.edu/Engin/DES/DHE_10_Crate/DHE_10_Crate.html The best way to see the design is to download the free DWF Viewer. You can then rotate, zoom in/out, hide parts in assemblies so you can see the insides, and print any view you like. Else, you’re stuck with the 2D PDF views.
