PARCC Millville High School

What is PARCC?  Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers  Computer-based assessment  Based on Common Core State Standards which were adopted by NJ since  Replacing the NJ HSPA (High School Proficiency Assessment)  Graduation requirement

Who must take PARCC?  All students enrolled in the following Language Arts and/or Math classes:  English 9, 10, 11  Algebra 1, Algebra 2  Geometry  Taken during the respective semester beginning in Spring 2015.

How is the test scheduled?  Fall Semester 2015  Two testing sessions (PBA & EOY)  Performance Based Assessment (PBA)  Math  2 days: 1 st - 90 min, 2 nd - 75 min  LAL  3 days: 1 st - 75 min, 2 nd - 90 min, 3 rd - 60 min  End of Year (EOY)  Math  2 days: 1 st - 80/90 min, 2 nd - 75 min  LAL  2 days: 1 st - 60 min, 2 nd - 60 min  Spring 2016  One testing session (EOY)  Math  3 days: TBD  LAL  3 days: TBD

What is being done in the classroom?  Implementation of Common Core State Standards in the English and Math curricula  PARCC tutorials to become familiar with the online assessment  PARCC-like problems  PARCC-like thinking skills  Increased use of online assessments in addition to paper-and-pencil  Increased research projects and similar investigations

Sample Test Items  PARCC test questions focus on critical thinking and problem solving Performance -Based Assessment End-of-YearAssessment  After 75 percent of the school year  Extended tasks, applications of concepts and skills  ELA/literacy: Writing effectively when analyzing text, research simulation  Math: Solving multistep problems requiring abstract reasoning, precision, perseverance and strategic use of tools  After 90 percent of the school year  Innovative, short-answer items  ELA/literacy: Reading comprehension  Math: Short items that address both concepts and skills

Literary Analysis (3 parts)  Part A - Students will read a long fictional passage whether it be a story, a poem, or a drama excerpt and then they will need to answer an evidence based multiple choice question, a technology enhanced question (think drop and drag text), and an academic vocabulary question.  Part B - Then they will read a second short passage with the same three types of questions.  Part C - Then they will respond to a literary analysis writing prompt in a 5 paragraph essay. (see handout for possible prompts) ELA

Research Based Simulation (4 parts)  Part A - Students will read a long nonfiction passage such as an article, a speech, a court case, a biography, etc and then they will need to answer an evidence based multiple choice question, a technology enhanced question (think drop and drag text), and an academic vocabulary question.  Parts B and C – Students will either read a short nonfictional passage much like the choices for part A or watch a related video and for each part answer the same 3 types of questions.  Part D – Students will need to cite evidence from all three sources to respond to a research simulation prompt. (see handout for possible prompts)

Narrative (2 parts)  Part A – Students will have a long or short fictional or nonfictional piece and possibly a paired piece or video with a technology enhanced response and 4 evidence based responses. Look for most likely a fictional or memoir type piece.  Part B – Students will respond to a narrative writing prompt, which still needs to be 5 paragraphs and include textual support from what they read. (See handout for sample prompts.)
