Sound! Speed of Sound: in air at 0°C, sound travels at m/s (~760 mi/hr). When air is _____, the molecules move faster, and so sound travels more.
Essentially, music is sound. Sound is produced when an object vibrates and it is what can be perceived by a living organism through its sense of hearing.

Quiz Put away all items except for a writing utensil and hard surface on which to write. NO TALKING during quiz. Await instructions.

Learning Target I can explain the basic element of sound called Duration. I can explain the basic element of sound called Pitch.

Read the passage on the next screen. Then do a “Lucky Seven.” In your journal, list SEVEN words from the passage that you think are important. Be sure the words relate to music / sound in some way.

The Basic Elements of Sound Imagine yourself seated by a pond. As you toss a pebble into the water, you notice a series of ripples that radiate outward from the impact. Similarly, sound waves move through the medium of air. As our eyes perceive the order of the waves on the pond, so do our ears comprehend the order of the sound waves. The basic elements of sound – duration, pitch, dynamics, and timbre – all correspond to the size, shape, and speed of those sound waves.

Results from the « Lucky 7 » Team up with a 1 or 2 people (not 3 or more). Share your results with your partner(s). One member of the team should write down all of the words you had in common in order to share with the class.

1). Duration The Concept of Time Through music we experience the various speeds and intensities of life, ranging from suspended animation in which time seems to stand still, to dizzying and breathtaking climaxes at which time rushes at a frantic tempo.

Levels of Duration The element of time permeates every level of music from the brief duration of a single note to the expansive breadth of an entire symphony.

Time and the Importance of Memory As music unfolds during time, it is only through our memory that we are able to make sense of the sequence of sonic events that constitutes the music.

2). Pitch The frequency observed in a sound wave, called pitch by musicians, determines how high or low the sound is perceived by the listener.

Learning Target I can explain the basic element of sound called Duration. I can explain the basic element of sound called Pitch.

H.O.T. Question Why might one person find certain pitches more desirable than another person?

Questions 1)How do notate the difference in pitch when writing music? 2) Do you think there is a way to notate duration in music? 3) Do you think the human ear can hear all possible pitches?
