1 Waves As the wave passes through, the particles in the air oscillate back and forth about their equilibrium positions but it is the disturbance which travels, not the individual particles in the medium.

2 Listener A or B would hear the same frequency or pitch
A stationary buzzer A B Listener A or B would hear the same frequency or pitch

3 Doppler Effect The pitch will seem to change as the object moves past.
It will seem to change from high to low pitch.

4 Similar to the previous slide except the object is traveling near the speed of sound

5 Here the object is traveling faster than the speed of sound.
Person A just heard a sonic boom person B will hear one in a few moments A B

6 Interference Both constructive and destructive. When two crest combine you “construct” a bigger wave. When a crest overlaps a trough you “destruct” a wave = silence.

7 Similar to previous slide

8 Similar to previous slide
Beats in music

9 Constructive Interference
Wave pulses are travelling on a string, one is moving to the right, the other is moving to the left. They pass through each other without being disturbed, and the net displacement is the sum of the two individual displacements. Constructive Interference

10 Longitudinal Wave Example sound
Disruption moves in direction wave is traveling

11 Transverse Waves The particle displacement is perpendicular to the direction of wave.

12 Echo Location

13 Reflection

14 Similar to a surface wave in Earthquake

15 Node = no movement = silence
Antinodes = max. movement or noise
