MALAYSIAN INITIATIVES TO OVERCOME THE DIGITAL DIVIDE 1.Pusat Internet Desa (Village Internet Center) 2.Medan Info Desa (Village Information Center) 3.Pusat Jalur Lebar Masyarakat (Community Broad Band Center)

PUSAT INTERNET DESA – VILLAGE INTERNET CENTER  Established since year 2000  Originally established under the Ministry of Energy, Post and Telecommunication  Now under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia  In 2010 there were 42 PID throughout Malaysia  PID is set up near the rural post office to facilitate the villagers to use the Internet when they come to the post office for various services

 The facilites provided are computer, notebooks and fax machine  The activities include free usage computer and internet, ICT training, development of websites etc.  Used by school children for their studies  Organized community activities such workshop, seminar with the local people

MEDAN INFO DESA – VILLAGE INFORMATION CENTER  Under the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development  Established since 2001  2 Categories of MID – District Level- provided with 20 computers and a meeting room - Sub-district level – provide with 10 computers  A MID will be established in a village that has won the National Vision Movement (a village that won the Village Cleanliness and Beauty Competition)  This village has no other rural internet initiative established

 Activities – Basic and skills training in ICT - Computer and Internet services - Websites services - Computer repair and upgrading workshop - Center to collect and provide information on the village

PUSAT JALUR LEBAR KOMUNITI- COMMUNITY BROADBAND CENTER Established under Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) with partnership with a telecommunication company The aim is to provide Wifi facilities to selected rural and semi urban areas The name now has been changed to Pusat Internet 1 Malaysia (1Malaysia Internet Center) Each Center is supported and sponsored by a company

Celcom has 37 such centers throughout Malaysia Each Center is equipped with 20 computers, high speed internet access, surfing area and training room Activities – Provides Internet access to school children, disabled persons, senior citizens and entrepreneurs Conducting workshops and trainings Cyber entrepreneurs development support
