0UR Motives John 6

“What motivates you?” Our motives towards Christ will determine whether we continue in our faith or walk away. “What motivates you?”

John 6 Jesus identifies wrong motives Challenges wrong motives Reveals true motives

Motives identified Sometime after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of the Sea of Galilee (that is, the Sea of Tiberias), and a great crowd of people followed him because they saw the signs  he had performed by healing the sick.  John 6:1-2

Motives identified …“Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. John 6:26

Motives revealed They followed Christ for his benefits Can he fix my marriage? Can he bless me financially? Can he repair my broken life? Can I find a mate? Can he prop up my self-esteem? Can he heal my body? Motives revealed

Motives challenged Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life.  Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35

How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven?” John 6:41-42 Motives challenged At this the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know?  How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven?” John 6:41-42

Motives challenged Do you know who I am?

Motives challenged I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world…”

Motives challenged Then the Jews began to argue sharply among themselves, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”

Motives challenged Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. John 6:51-56

Motives challenged Do you know what I expect? Jesus, knowing that they intended to come and make him king by force, withdrew again to a mountain by himself. John 6:15

The outcome of wrong motives On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?” John 6:60 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him. John 6:66

True MOTIVES REVEALED “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve. John 6:67 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:68-69

We can’t live without you True MOTIVES REVEALED We can’t live without you “Where can we go?”

“We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God” True MOTIVES There is no one like you “We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God”
