Criteria to Participate in an After School Snack Program National School Lunch Program… LEA must participate in the NSLP; and The LEA must sponsor or operate a program which: contains an educational/enrichment activity offered after the regular school day. Afterschool Programs … and SNACKS

A site qualifies as area eligible if it is in the attendance area of a school which has at least 50% of it’s enrollment eligible for free or reduced-price meals. A school that qualifies as “area eligible” may also qualify any other school/site in the same attendance zone. Area Eligibility – Defined

LEAs should check with the local health department to see if there are any food safety requirements which must be met prior to serving snacks at a location other than a school. Health & Safety Requirements

After School Snack Programs must be regularly scheduled, following the regular school day (could be a program which meets weekly, or three times a week; does not have to be daily). Snacks cannot be claimed for reimbursement that are served on weekends, holidays, school breaks, or during summer vacation. Approved Service Days

Snacks must contain at least two of the five components (in the required amounts). milk 8 fluid ounces fruit and/or vegetable ¾ cup or 6 ounces meat/meat alternate 1 ounce Whole Grains/Breads1 serving Snack – Meal Pattern

Three Components: Juice/Fruit/Vegetable (1- cup offered). Grains/ meat/meat alternates – optional (minimum amount over weekly plus daily 1oz eq Milk – 2 Breakfast Meal Pattern

Food Component: One of three food groups that comprise reimbursable breakfast. (grains or meat/ma; fruit or vegetable; milk) Food Item: A specific food offered within the three food components. Offer vs Serve - Breakfast

The New SBP meal pattern does NOT require a m/ma. Menu planners have two options for including m/ma in breakfast. Option #1 offer m/ma in place of grains after minimum daily requirement is offered. Option #2 offer a m/ma as an extra item and not credit it toward any component. Meat or Meat Alternate

Must offer all three components. Must offer at least 4 food items from three components. Student must select at least three food items. One selection MUST be at least ½ cup of fruit/vegetable. Offer vs. Serve - Breakfast
