Protective Adaptations Std. 12 Protective Adaptations Mimicry Camouflage Beak Types Migration Hibernation/Estivation

Mimicry: When an organism looks like or copies something that other organisms either want to avoid or are attracted to Aggressive mimicry: when animals copy something to lure prey Batesian mimicry: when a harmless organism looks like a harmful one Example: milk snake looks like a coral snake Mullerian mimicry: when harmful organisms look alike Example: yellow with black coloration of wasps, African honeybees, and yellowjackets Camouflage: when an animal can blend in with its environment Draw & color 2 examples (grasshoppers, stick insects, etc.) Beak Type: different beak types allow different species to have different diets Draw & color 3 different beak types & explain what they are

Migration: the movement of animals from one region or climate to another for a specific period of time to find warmer climates with more plentiful food supplies Draw & color 3 examples of animals that hibernate Birds, bats, whales, fish, elk, butterflies Hibernation: during the winter, animals go through a resting state when their entire metabolism slows down including digestion, respiration, and heart rate Estivation: a resting state similar to hibernation that animals use in hot weather; it can be daily or longer Draw & color 2 examples of animals that hibernate Examples: bears, ground squirrels, snakes, rabbits Draw & color 2 examples of animals that estivate Examples: snakes, lizards, iguanas, desert tortoise, salamanders, frogs
