5. MAKING REQUESTS ACTIVITY Business English Conversation and Listening Instructor: Hsin-Hsin Cindy Lee, PhD

WRITING & SPEAKING EXERCISE Imagine that you are organizing a party for a senior supervisor who is going to retire in 2 weeks. After you and your colleagues decide the details of the party, you now begin to contact relevant people to get things done. First, you need to arrange the venue, food and drinks. Write a polite email to a hotel bookings manager regarding your requests. In the email, you tell the hotel that you shall call him in person later.

OTHER TASKS The hotel manager then also needs further information about a confirmed number of people and the guests’ preferences for food and drinks one week ahead the party. You also need to call colleagues in other departments to prepare entertaining programs for the party. The program plan needs to be ready at least 3 days before the party. In the phone call, practice making requests politely and talk about deadlines. Try to use the phrases you’ve learned to get things done well.
