The Spanish Colonies 1535 – New Spain is formed 1565 – St. Augustine is built Objectives: Locate the lands in North America claimed by Spain. Describe relations between Spanish settlers and Native Americans Spain learned in the 1500’s that claiming land was not the same as controlling land. Native Americans lived in the Americas, and other European countries were competing for control of land. Colony – a land ruled by another country.

In 1535, New Spain became a colony, with Mexico City as its capital. Several European nations often clamed the same lands in the Americas, and most disregarded the fact that Native Americans already lived there. Spain set up colonies to protect it’s claim. New Spain

Having exhausted resources on the Caribbean Islands of pearls and gold, and practically eliminating the race of native Americans there, the Spanish attacked the mainland. Columbus Cortes Pizzaro Ponce de Leon All attributed to the destruction of the native American civilizations and peoples. The Taino, Aztec, Incan, and many others. Plantations, or large farms, were set up. By 1550 more than 100,000 Spanish colonists spread across the Americas In 1506, the first ship of 17 Africans were brought to plantations in America.

The Growth of Slavery Both Spain and Portugal needed many workers to grow crops and mine for silver and gold. Slavery – is the practice of holding people against their will and making them work without pay. * Many thousands of Native Americans died from hunger and the work they did. Diseases such as small pox and measles sometimes killed whole tribes. SO they brought Africans as slaves. How did slavery develop in the Americas? At first, Native Americans were used as enslaved workers, and many died. Then colonists used enslaved Africans.

Settling in the Borderlands New Spain’s capital was Mexico City The lands on the edge of Spain’s claims were called boderlands. ST. AUGUSTINE 1565 – Pedro Menendez de Aviles and 1,500 soldiers, sailors + settlers sailed from Spain SANTE FE The king sent missionaries to convert Native Americans to Christianity. Missionaries built large settlements called missions. In 1610, Spanish Missionaries settled Santa Fe. The capital of New Mexico colony. Presidios - fort

Summary In the 1500’s, explorers often paid no attention to other countries’ claims by setting up colonies. The Spanish needed workers, so they enslaved Native Americans and Africans Why did Spain set up colonies in North America? To protect its land and to convert Native Americans to Christianity.
