Scanning and Skimming

Skimming refers to the process of reading only main ideas within a passage to get an overall impression of the content of a reading selection. An example of this is when we read the title of a newspaper to know what happens everyday. How to skim:

1.State the specific information you are looking for. 2.Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what clues you might use to help you locate the answer. For example, if you were looking for a certain date, you would quickly read the paragraph looking only for numbers. 3.Use headings and any other aids that will help you identify which sections might contain the information you are looking for. 4.Selectively read and skip through sections of the passage. 1.State the specific information you are looking for. 2.Try to anticipate how the answer will appear and what clues you might use to help you locate the answer. Scanning is a reading technique to be used when you want to find specific information quickly. In scanning you have a question in your mind and you read a passage only to find the answer, ignoring unrelated information. How to scan:

Shall we send children to study abroad? With more and more people becoming rich in recent years, it is a new tendency for them to send their children to study abroad. But I don’t think it is a good idea. First of all, children are too young to look after themselves. Second, the language barrier is a serious problem. Many children are not proficient in the foreign language before going abroad. As a result, they have difficulty in understanding what the native speakers are talking about. Thirdly, they may get into trouble when dealing with various situations for lack of knowledge of the customs in the strange land. Furthermore, the cost of living is much higher than that in our country, which might cause a heavy burden to the family. In conclusion, there are more disadvantages in sending children to study abroad. So, we’d better not do it.
