Everyone needs help on Citations There are many different circumstances –Too many details to remember! Use the resources –Use BibMe or EasyBib for Works Cited –Use If we disagree, we’ll consult this source – –For Primary sources, use the Library of Congress – a.htmlhttp:// a.html

Works Cited There is a problem with bibme.org –The automatic fill-in is LOUSY –Many, many errors. Watchouts: –Look for an author. –What’s a publisher? –Do not include a website’s marketing!

Primary Sources Complex, and not covered well in the OWL at Purdue –Instead, use the Library of Congress. –Scroll around until you find the right type of source material. ysources/mla.html ysources/mla.html

Works Cited: Summary Use manual entry for bibme.org Look around the site –Author of your article –Publisher of the website Who owns © –Dates Get the format right! I’m going to check these carefully.

In-text Citations They’re easy!! When do you use them? –Quote –Facts you pull from your research –Ideas you use from your research Not JUST when you quote!!

In-text Citations What do they look like? –Parentheses at the end of your sentence –Inside the period. Roosevelt himself agonized over the risks posed by his position that maximum possible aid should go to England (Kennedy 448). “I might guess wrong…and if I should guess wrong, the results might be serious.” (Ickes 3:200) Through May and June of 1940, the president stuck with his risky bet (“Lend-lease in 1940”). By year- end, the results were clear (Jones). The first one is a book (author and page #). The second is a journal (author, volume and page #). The third one is a web article with no author (title). The fourth one is a web article (author only).

In-text citations What to include? Use the first data that appears for that source in your Works Cited. –Print: author’s last name and page # –Web: author (if extant), or title. –Journal: author, volume # and page #. They should be very short. –No sub-titles. –NO URLs!!!

TIP: Do your Works Cited 1st Makes it easy to pick up the correct info –Author Name, OR –Article Title

While we’re at it…. Common Grammar Problems Pronouns –“They” “it”… to what do these refer? Last noun. Please be careful. Its. It’s. There. Their. –They’re not the same! –One point off for every one of these errors. Verbs: use past tense
