Work to live Do you work to live or live to work?

What is the difference between a job and a career? A job is work for which you receive pay. A career is a lifetime journey of building and making good use of your skills, knowledge and experiences.

Explain the difference in meaning between the phrases in italics in these pairs of sentences. 1. A) I got the sack on Friday. B) I was made redundant on Friday. 2. A) I’m on maternity leave. B) I’m on sick leave. 3. A) He’s in a dead-end job. B) He’s got a promising career ahead. 4. A) She has a demanding job. B) She has a high-powered job. 5. A) I was promoted to this job. B) I was headhunted for this job.

Match the following idioms (connected to work) to the following definitions: 1 I like Tina, but her brother is a nasty piece of work. 2 Thieves broke into the jeweller’s last night and stole the works – cash, jewellery and a supply of diamonds. 3 If you take on this new IT project, you really will have your work cut out for you. 4 I hate dusting, but this new cleaning cloth really does work wonders. 5 The electricians made short work of installing the central heating – it only took them two days. 6 I had my watch repaired and now it works like clockwork. 7 Dealing with trauma victims is all in a day’s work for ambulance crews. A be very busy B to be an unpleasant person C everything, the whole lot D do a very good job E work perfectly (usually of a machine) F do a job easily and quickly G be an accepted part of a particular job

A new league table has said that b) __________ are the happiest workers in the UK.

Some happy alternatives So maybe there are a few downsides to being a hairdresser, even if the job does make some happy – long hours and a lot of standing may not make everyone happy. If hairdressing isn’t your thing then you’ll be glad to hear that the same survey found that, as well as hairdressers, a)__________, b)__________, c)__________, d)__________ and e)__________were also happy jobs to have. However, to save yourself from unhappiness in your job avoid being f)__________, g)__________ and h)__________!
