{ Body Systems Dividing the body

 Provides all body systems with oxygen and nutrients  Carries away carbon dioxide and other wastes Circulatory System

 Consists of:  Blood (oxygen source for the body)  Heart (pumps blood throughout the body)  Arteries (carry blood away from heart)  Veins (carry blood to the heart) …. Continued

 Systolic (peak pressure in the arteries)  Diastolic (minimal pressure in arteries) Blood Pressure

 Breaks down food into chemicals that the body can use for energy and to maintain cells and tissues Digestive System

 Consists of:  Liver (detoxification and protein synthesis)  Stomach (1 st step of digestion after chewing)  Small Intestine (where MOST digestion takes place)  Large Intestine (absorbs water and pass useless waste through the body) Digestive System

 Carries oxygen from the air to the bloodstream and rids the body of carbon dioxide Respiratory System

 Consists of:  Lungs  Bronchi (trachea to lungs)  Bronchial tubes (bronchi to alveoli)  Alveoli (lungs to bloodstream- gas exchange) Respiratory System

 Gathers information from the external environment, stores and processes it, and initiates appropriate responses Nervous System

 Consists of:  Axon  Dendrite  Neuron- Processes and transmits information by electrical signaling  Brain- Controls all senses Nervous System

Nervous System Components   Central Nervous System- Brain and Spinal Cord   Peripheral Nervous System- Connects the body to the CNS

Brain   Cerebrum- Largest part of the brain. Controls all senses and emotions   Cerebellum- Second largest. Controls muscle coordination, balance, and posture   Brainstem- Connects to spinal cord. Controls heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing

 Provides the framework and protection for the body  The typical human body has 206 bones Skeletal System

Skeletal and Muscular System   A place where two bones connect is called a joint. Pivot Ball and SocketHinge

Skeletal and Muscular System Types of Muscle   SMOOTH- makes up your internal organs (stomach and intestine)   CARDIAC- (you better know)   SKELETAL- muscle that attaches bone to bone
