 Ask about the overall passage.  Here are some examples of good comprehension questions  A)The passage is primarily concerned with…?  B) Which one of the following choices best describes the tone of the passage?  C) Which one of the choices best describes the narrator’s relationship to her mother?

 D)To whom does the speaker of the poem address his/her speech?  E) It is evident in the passage that the author feels his hometown is…  F) Which of the following best describes the speaker’s changing attitude toward the object being described over the course of the first, the second, and the third stanzas, respectively?

 Sends you back to specific places in the passage  Some example questions:  A) What significant change occurs in the speaker’s attitude towards her mother in lines 5-9?  B) How do the final words of the third passage, “but then….trust him,” alter the remainder of the passage?

 C) What parallel structure helps to emphasize the attitude of the speaker?  D)In the context of the following lines (1- 5), the phrase “This loaf’s big” is used as a metaphor for the…  E)When is the third stanza the playwright character says, “ I believe my tragedy is worthy of performance at the Globe,” he is referring to…

 If you are confident that you comprehend the passage, answer the questions in the order they are presented.  If you are NOT confident, do the detail questions first, then go to the main idea questions. Knowing the main idea, will help you to answer the general questions on the passage.

 Going to specific questions first provides focus and familiarity with the passage.

 1) When in doubt, pick an answer that agrees with the main idea.  2)Pick answers that agree with each other. You’ll find correct answers to be consistent.

 ETS is good at writing wrong answers that seem appealing.  Read the question carefully, it possible to misread the question and understand the passage.  Stop looking for the right answer- look for the wrong answer and eliminate them.
