Fifth Grade Problem Solving: Using the Problem Solving Process Tips: -Teachers, please read through the whole presentation prior to the activity. -Each activity is meant to be used in addition to your classroom teaching. -Each activity includes a journal component. Objective: TSW will solve problems by using the problem solving process.

Understanding the problem, Creating a plan, Implementing the plan, and Reflecting on the process. Each time you see the journal paper you will need to write in your Math Journal.

Use the Problem Solving Process to solve the following puzzles. Puzzle #1: Which numbers replace the question marks? A: ?20 B:36?15 21 C:26?

Understanding the problem What is the puzzle asking you to do?

Did you say? Replace the question marks with numbers that will complete each pattern. GOOD FOR YOU! Click Here

Creating a plan What kind of plan would you use?

Did you say? Find the relationship between the other numbers in each line. EXCELLENT! Click Here

Implementing the plan How would you put your plan to work?

Did you say? Check to see how much difference there is between the existing numbers and if a pattern occurs. GREAT IDEA! Click Here

Reflecting on the process How would you explain the process?

Did you say? Write the entire step-by- step process and describe an alternate plan or how you could make your plan better. JOB WELL DONE! Click to see the answers ---> Click Here

ANSWERS: A: ?20 B:36?15 21 C:26? A: 9. Subtract 2, add 7, subtract 4, add 9, subtract 6, & add 11. B: 10. Add 3, 4, 5, and 6. C: 18. Multiply each number by 3. Go on to puzzle # >

Puzzle #2: What numbers should surround the fourth triangle? ? ? 24 8? Use the Problem Solving Process --->

Understanding the problem, Creating a plan, Implementing the plan, and Reflecting on the process. Click to see the questions you should ask yourself ----->

What is the puzzle asking? What is my plan? How do I use my plan? How do I explain and make my plan better? QUESTIONS: Click to see the answers --->
