1 Solving Patterning Word Problems
Grade 6 Math Unit on Patterning

2 Re-cap - What is a recursive pattern?
- How do you find the pattern rule? - What is the next three terms in this pattern? What is the pattern rule? 2, 8, 26, ___, ____, ____

3 Re-cap 2, 8, 26, 80, 242, 728 The Rule: Start at 2, multiply by 3, then add 2

4 Word Problems How do you think we could solve this word problem involving patterns? While sorting some change into piggy banks, Federico put 3 loonies in the first piggy bank, 6 loonies in the second piggy bank, and 9 loonies in the third piggy bank.If this pattern continues, how many loonies will Federico put in the fourth and fifth piggy bank?

5 Solving Patterning Word Problems
To solve patterning word problems, we must put the information given to us in a t-chart. Piggy Bank Amount of Money 1 3 2 6 9 4 5 To solve, we need to examine the relationship between the first number in the column and the second number in the column.

6 Answer How do you know??? Piggy Bank Amount of Money 1 3 2 6 9 4 12 5
15 How do you know???

7 More Numeric Problems How would you solve this?
On the last day of school, the first student will receive 2 blue pens, the second student will receive 4 blue pens, the third student will receive 8 blue pens, the fourth student will receive 14 blue pens, and the fifth student will receive 22 blue pens. If this pattern continues, how many blue pens will the sixth student receive?

8 Tips to Solving Patterning Word Problems
- First, create a t-chart - Second, fill in the t-chart with the information given - Third, look at the relationship between the first column and the second column (ask yourself, how am I getting from one number to the next - what is the rule?) - Fourth, look at the relationship between the numbers in the second column (ask yourself, what is the pattern?)

9 Solve A new cookbook is becoming popular. The local bookstore ordered 1 copy in June, 4 copies in July, 16 copies in August, and 64 copies in September. If this pattern continues, how many copies will the bookstore order in October?

10 Task In your groups, solve the numeric patterning word problems.
Be sure to create a t-chart and fill it in with the appropriate information.
