BROWARD READING ENDORSEMENT ADD-ON PROGRAM What’s New and What You Need to Know! Terri Coyle Secondary Reading Curriculum Specialist NOVEMBER 2011

Who Needs the Endorsement? Teachers with any certification who teach reading in grades 7-12, but are not certified in reading, must have reading endorsement. All Reading Coaches and Reading Resource Specialists are required to be reading endorsed. Teachers in grades K - 6 are not required to be reading endorsed. 6 th grade classes must be pure 6 th only!

What is the difference between Reading Endorsement and Reading Certification? The Reading Endorsement is a “rider” to other certifications. It is made up of 15 university course credit hours (or 300 inservice points). Teachers with 30 university course credit hours or a Master’s Degree in Reading must take the reading certification test to earn the K-12 reading certification.

What is the Reading Endorsement Comprised of and How Can It Be Earned? The reading endorsement is comprised of 6 competencies. The reading endorsement can be pursued through either the following tracks:

Paths to Reading Endorsement Broward Reading Endorsement Add-on Program State DOE Approved College Coursework

Workshop Combination Track Consisting of district staff development (face-to-face and online courses) One training/course option to satisfy each of five competencies, plus the Practicum. Follow the Workshop Combination Track Plan of Study Sheet and the Workshop Combination Track Procedures!

Virtual University Track Consisting of five district developed online courses, plus the Practicum. Follow the Virtual University Plan of Study Sheet and the Virtual University Track Procedures!

How can I access current information about the Reading Endorsement? Check the Reading Endorsement Conference in CAB on a regular basis. This conference is in the Instructional Resources folder. Reading Endorsement information is also available on the Virtual University website:

Forms You Should Have: Approved Courses List Procedures for Workshop Combination Track or Virtual University Track Plan of Study Sheet Workshop Combination Track or Virtual University Track Portfolio Guidelines (for WCT) Practicum Protocol (min. 4 copies) – 2010 Lesson Plan and Reflection Templates

Updated Approved Courses List Current vs. Retired courses for the Workshop Combination Track: Retired courses are still accepted (1999 – 2010) if they show on your ESS Inservice Report. Title and points must match the Plan of Study Sheet!

On the Plan of Study Sheet for the selected track, check only one course per competency. Do not mix tracks! Note training date and BET/BE numbers.

Approved Reading Endorsement Courses Update: DOE Courses are no longer free of charge!  Competency 1: FOLAC = FL-DOE Online Course Competency 3: ADAPT = FL-DOE Online Course Competency 4 and 5: FADI = FL-DOE Online Course Competency 4 and 5: PDA-ESE = FL-DOE Online Course These DOE courses may only be used on the Workshop Combination Track, not on the Virtual University Track!

Reading Endorsement Fast Track Model Competency 1: LETRS 1 (3 days) Competency 2: Advanced Reading Processes (6 weeks) Competency 3: LETRS 3 (3 days) Competency 4: CRISS (3 days) Competency 5: Portfolio using CRISS with RC support Competency 6: Practicum using CRISS with RC support

The Portfolio inch binder with tabs Tab 1: Plan of Study Sheet Tab 2: Inservice Record Tab 3: Implementation Summary Tab 4: Six lesson plans Tab 5: Twelve samples of student work Tab 6: Six dated Lesson Reflection Tab 7: Four complete Practicum Protocols

Four Practicum Protocols must be completed in order to satisfy Competency 6. This may require more than four observations. Two Practicum Protocols must be conducted by the reading coach, and two by an administrator.

WHAT NOT TO DO!!!! COPIES of documents BEEP lessons Override procedures Money orders in with their Portfolio and/or Practicum Submit their application to Certification before all coursework shows up on their Inservice Record Submit unprofessional and/or illegible work Submit coursework NOT on the Plan of Study Sheet Submit coursework NOT on your Inservice Record Lack of sign-in sheet/appraisal evidence Mix tracks

For Elementary Teachers: Which track to choose? If you have completed A.L.L., Reading First Summer Academy, Wilson Reading and/or CRISS follow the Workshop Combination Track.

For Secondary Teachers: Which track to choose? All secondary reading teachers should follow the Workshop Combination Track.
