Presentation transcript:

Definitions of Properties Physical properties can be observed without chemically changing matter. Chemical properties describe how a substance interacts with other substances. Properties that change the chemical composition of a substance

Examples of Properties PHYSICAL CHEMICAL Color Odor Phase Luster Shape Malleability Ductility Density Shape solubility Reactivity Combustibility Flammability Rusting Tarnishing Corroding Acidity Oxidation Conductivity

PROPERTIES Intensive A property that does not change when the amount of sample changes. – density, pressure, temperature, color. Extensive A property that changes when the amount of matter in a sample changes. – mass, volume, length, and charge

Properties Mass Anything that takes up space and remains constant regardless of location Weight Force that measure the pull on a given mass by gravity; dependent on location Volume LxWxH Changes with temperature

EXAMPLE Mass of water100.0 g10.0 g Volume of water0.100 L0.010 L Temperature of water25 °C Density of water1.00 g/mL

SPECIFIC GRAVITY Specific Gravity: has no units!! Specific gravity is the density of a substance relative to some reference substance: ( usually compared to water. Specific gravity = density of substance density of reference substance
