ATLANTIS Next generation of EU-U.S. cooperation programs in higher education (summary presented at the Leeds meeting)

Summary  Only undergraduate programs  Double of joint degrees  Four years funding period  Minimal number of institutions:  1 in the U.S. (US-1)  2 in the EU (EU-1, EU-2)  Max. budget (EU): 696k€ (inc. 15k€/year flat rate for all EU institutions)  Student exchange starts: September 2007  Deadline for submission: 7/7/2006

The call EAC/36/2006 ATL ANT IS  Title: Actions for Transatlantic Links and Academic Networks in Training and Integrated Studies Action 1: Transatlantic degree consortia projects Action 2: Excellence (Follow-up) Mobility projects (not available in 2006) Policy-oriented measures

General objectives  Human resource development for „global knowledge-based economy”  Promote „mutual understanding of people”  Promote collaboration between universities  Contribute to the development of higher education institutions  Contribute to the professional excellence of the individual participants

Operational objectives  Joint or double degrees  „Two degrees for the price of one”  Recognition of qualifications  Linguistic and cultural integration  Increase mobility

Institutions  At least one university from the U.S.  At least two universities from the EU (from different member states)  Only one EU university delivers a degree for the students from the U.S.: possible but less competitive  At the overall selection of the proposals, the high diversity of the EU member states with lead institutions is preferred.

Language of education  Consortia must provide the possibility for the students to use at least two languages spoken in the EU  Language of education may be different of the language spoken in the country (e.g. English in Budapest)  Linguistic and cultural training is required for U.S. students  U.S. students are expected to gain professional expertise in at least one language spoken in the EU member states (other than English)

Mobility (EU universities)  At least 6 students each year  One academic year: 10 months  At least one year of mobility for participating students  Student mobility grant: 12k€ / year  Faculty mobility grant: 1k€ (travel) + 1k€ / week (min. 1, max. 8 weeks), max. 60 k€ for a 4 year long project

Requirements for the proposal  International offices are required in all institutions.  Agreements (tuition fees, credit transfers) are needed  Guarantee of degree deliverance for successful students  Description of the curriculum and mobility scenario  Cultural preparation in the U.S. and language education in Europe

Payment procedures  Similar to our current grant: 25% advance payment at the begining of each year (4 year long project) Interim report is required at the end of each year

A general starting idea  U.S. students would come to the EU universities for fundamental training (during the first half of their B.Sc. program).  EU students would go to the U.S. universities for specialization (second half of their B.Sc. program).
