GREEN CHEMISTRY

What is Wrong? kk

What is wrong?

1. What does chemistry have to do with these problems? 2.How can chemistry help with these problems?

Green Chemistry Is About... Cost Waste Materials Hazard Risk Energy

 Green Chemistry is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and/or generation of hazardous substances. What is Green Chemistry?

“ Chemistry has an important role to play in achieving a sustainable civilization on earth. ” — Dr. Terry Collins, Professor of Chemistry Carnegie Mellon University

GREEN CHEMISTRY WORKS TOWARD SUSTAINABILITY BY: Making chemical products that do not harm health or the environment Using industrial processes that reduce or eliminate hazardous chemicals Designing more efficient processes that minimize the production of waste materials.

Examples of Green Chemistry  Removing Arsenic and Chromate from pressure treated wood.  Many new pesticides.  New oxidants for bleaching paper and disinfecting water.  Getting the lead out of automobile paints.  Recyclable carpeting.  Replacing VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) and chlorinated solvents.  Biodegradable polymers from renewable resources.
