Earthquakes happen where Earth's plates meet. Most earthquakes happen under the sea. Where the plates stick, pressure builds up and then the earth shakes.

DISASTERS! Tsunamis Landslides Hurricanes Earthquakes etc. Nobody likes them so we better be prepared!

Data is collected and observed Where there any injuries or deaths? When, where and why did it happen? What type of disaster was this? What buildings were damaged? How big was this event?

Scientist answer these and many more questions, then share their results with the community

Earthquake engineers use data to simulate disasters using instruments like shake tables and tsunami generators

They use the result of their simulations to determine how they can design buildings and bridges Top 16 Quakes Earthquake and Year Number of Deaths Magnitude 3 / 16Sumatra , Not Ranked Haiti , / 16Tohoku , Conclusion Earthquake engineers design structures in seismic zones to help mitigate damage and decrease the number of fatalities in a natural disaster Largest Earthquakes Since 1900 (USGS)

Good News! You will be an earthquake engineer today! There will be 3 engineering groups. Each person in the group will have 10 min to build your structure out of your given material. When each group is done, place your structure in the wave tank! Will YOUR structure withstand a tsunami?
