Distance Diagnostics through Digital Imaging

Who We Are The University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (Teaching, Research & Extension) Center for Internet Imaging & Database Systems (CIIDS) Participating Departments/Disciplines: Aquaculture, Biological & Agricultural Engineering, Crop & Soil Science, Entomology, Forestry, Horticulture, Plant Pathology, Veterinary Medicine

Distance Diagnostics through Digital Imaging DDDI is “Tele-Medicine for Agriculture”

Overview Complements mailing of physical samples for evaluation, using Web form and digital images. Versatile and expandable to other disciplines, states and countries. Initially developed by Plant Pathology Department and Office of Information Technology with extramural funding; now produced by the Center for Internet Imaging & Database Systems (CIIDS) Our focus: to produce a system that is easy to use, supportable, facilitates diagnostics, and is easily replicated.

System components Imaging stations--in Georgia, stations are located in County Extension Offices throughout the state. Senders—in Georgia, faculty in the County Extension Offices send the samples Receivers—in Georgia, Diagnostic faculty at the University receive the samples and diagnose them Web-based application for accepting and transmitting information and images

Distance Diagnostics Imaging Station - digital cameras, computer, dissecting microscope, compound microscope, microscope/camera adapter, printer and plant disease compendia

Imaging Station Locations in Georgia Honduras 44,500 sq mi / Georgia 58,977 sq mi green Counties in green currently have full Imaging Stations. All counties have hand- held digital cameras and Internet access.

County Faculty County faculty with agriculture responsibilities in all Georgia County Extension Offices, have been trained to image specimens and submit DDDI samples.

Diagnostic faculty Diagnostic faculty in participating departments have been trained to access DDDI samples and to submit appropriate evaluations, recommendations and comments.

Web Application The application uses forms designed by each discipline to collect environmental information. Up to five images can be attached with each sample.

How Distance Diagnostics Works Note : Logo graphics from other states are included to show how the system can be customized with individual identities.

Agent takes images.. with hand-held camera:

with dissecting microscope:

with compound microscope:

.. then connects to Web and logs on.. (U.Ga. form)

..selects an entry form and enters data..

..enters and previews image(s).. (Auburn form)

.. and submits the information. (U.Ga. form)

The system notifies the appropriate diagnostic faculty via ..

The notified diagnostician views waiting-sample list.. (Illinois Form)

..looks at sample information.. (Texas A&M form) Whole berryBad spotMore spotsSpores, hi powerSpores, lower power

..views full-size images..

..determines how to handle diagnosis.. (Illinois form)

..and fills in the diagnostic fields.. (U.Ga. Veterinary Medicine form)

..with diagnosis etc.

Summary of County Office Involvement Agents capture diagnostic images Login to DDDI / Web site Select appropriate submission form Fill in environmental information and attach images Submit completed sample form with image(s)

Summary of Diagnostic Faculty Involvement Receive and read notification of sample submission Login to DDDI / Web site Retrieve newly-submitted sample Examine environmental information and images Compose a diagnosis and recommendation and submit the completed diagnosis
