It Takes A Village….. To Reach and Inspire Our Students Susan Coleman Orange Coast College

WHY is it important? Without Effective Career Development… Most career decision-making is unintentional and uninformed. 65% of working adults do not believe they are in the right job (NCDA/Gallup, 1999)

Who needs it?

T he“Next” Generation Born Between 1980 and 1999 Millennials Screenagers Echo-Boomers Wired Generation Dot-com Generation Entitled Generation 75 million

Getting to Know Them…………. Raised on Technology Open-minded about globalization Raised to “play” Instant gratification/ coddled Improved Literacy Work well on teams

More …………………. Work to live, not live to work Employee for life is a “Myth” Grew up with both parents working 50% grew up with single parents

Attitudes or qualities they bring to the workplace…………. Boredom Low perception of boundaries Willingness to sacrifice benefits for better work/life balance Unwillingness to think of early job as careers Expect employers to be socially responsible Acceptance of authority and willingness to follow rules

Why should we care? Boomers replacement in the workforce Change jobs 19 times High turnover of knowledge workers We have a lot to learn from the “Millennials” Influence the workplace for the next 50 years 80 million

What can we all do for our students? Encourage experiences Be a support system Affirm who they are Share information

Career Development Is Everyone’s Responsibility…….. Let’s infuse “Career Development” throughout the curriculum to be taught by not only counselors but teachers, parents, and the student’s too!

We’re here to help Grant funded, free resources Available to all….

Try this………... For Students
