Inserting Glass Into Tubing Glass tube into all-purpose tubing Glass pipet into pipetter Glass arm of filter flask into vacuum tubing Glass thermometer into rubber stopper CHE116/CHE1182

Basic Technique Always hold the glass tubing near the end being inserted, to prevent the breakage of the glass while it is inserted into tubing. Wet the outside end of the glass tubing with deionized water (just a drop or two). This may make insertion into the tubing easier. (continued on next slide) CHE116/CHE1183

Use a thick layer of paper towel around the glass to prevent cuts if the glass should break CHE116/CHE1184

Pipet and Pipetter Pipetter Pipet CHE116/CHE1185

Use proper technique to prevent cuts Hold pipet near end to be inserted Insert pipet into pipetter CHE116/CHE1186

Filter Flask and Vacuum Tubing CHE116/CHE1187

Hold side arm near endPush glass arm into tubing CHE116/CHE1188

Thermometer and Rubber Stopper Hold thermometer near the end to be inserted Insert into rubber stopper (would be better with paper towel wrap) CHE116/CHE1189

Additional Safety Notes Acquiring Reagents Wear gloves and goggles Always dispense chemicals from stock bottles located in the fume hood. The safest place to have a chemical spill is in the fume hood. Only take as much chemicals as needed to perform the experiment. Label the receiving beaker. After the experiment is finished, the chemicals (reactants and products) should be disposed of in the waste bottle located in the fume hood. CHE116/CHE11810

Fume Hoods and Reagents CHE116/CHE11811

Acids Acids are used frequently in CHE116 and CHE118. Always wear gloves and goggles when handling any and all chemicals When combining acid and water, always add acid to water; never add water to acid CHE116/CHE11812

For All Laboratory Work: Always wear goggles and gloves during lab work. Take goggles off at the goggle cabinet. Take the smallest amount of reagent necessary to your lab bench (if reagent is allowed outside of hood) Clean up chemical spills immediately Notify your lab instructor if you get any chemicals on you. An incident report will be written. CHE116/CHE11813
