2 Chemical Splash Goggles What: Goggles that cover your eye and the surrounding area. Why: Keep chemicals from splashing into your eye. Where: In the white cabinet on the wall.

3 Contact Lenses Dangerous to where during a lab using chemicals Why? Even if you are wearing safety goggles, fumes can accumulate under the lens and cause serious injuries or blindness. Wear a pear of glasses on the days that we do labs using chemicals.

4 Proper Clothing Closed toe shoes, long pants, and gloves must be worn Why? To prevent you from getting chemicals on your skin Also, long hair must be tied back when using open flames

5 Safety Rules Wear safety goggles (chemicals) Tie hair back (open flames) Do not eat, drink, or chew gum – could poison yourself Wear proper footwear Take labs and safety seriously Notify teacher immediately for all accidents Do not inhale fumes Know the locations of safety equipment

6 Safety Rules Notify teacher of any spills on clothing Chemicals must be disposed of in a separate jar- do not dump down drain or back into the original container Always add acid to water, not the other way around Keep open test tubes that are being heated pointed upward – not at yourself or others

7 Safety Equipment First Aid Kit - Fire extinguisher  When: Fire !!!!!  Location: On the wall Fire blanket  When: Fire !!!!  Location: Gas shut-off valve  When: Fire!!!!!  Location: Button on the wall. Cuts off gas to all burners.

8 Safety Equipment Shower  When: Also fire!!!!  Location: By the cabinet on the side of the room. Eye wash  When: If you need to rinse your eyes because chemicals splash in them.  Location: Near the shower.

9 Safety Scenarios Someone drops a beaker and glass shatters on to the floor  Do not touch the glass, clear out of the area  Notify your teacher and I will clean it up Chemicals splash onto your hand and in your eyes  Use the eye was station and clean your skin thoroughly Someone leaves their bunsen burner unattended  Notify your teacher and turn it off! Fire!!!!!  Hit the gas shut off valve  Get the fire extinguisher  Leave the room
