Cracking the Myth 7 th Grade Postsecondary Belief #1

Activity Each student should have one egg. DO NOT OPEN THE EGG UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO!!! Today, we will be exploring different beliefs regarding going to college.

Activity Every student with color (A) egg will be going to college and every student with color (B) egg will not be going to college – Students with color A eggs write down three reasons why students are able to go to college – Students with color B egg write down three reasons why students may not be able to go to college

Think-Pair-Share Pair up with someone with the same colored egg. – Share your 3 ideas – Discuss: What similarities do you have in your ideas?

Think-Pair-Share Now, pair up with someone with a different colored egg. – Share your 3 ideas – Discuss: What similarities do you have in your ideas?

Discussion What are some of the reasons students with color A eggs say they can attend college? What are some of the reasons students with color B eggs say they cannot go to college? How did you come up with these reasons?

Cracking the Myth Crack open your egg Inside, you’ll find a slip of paper with one misconception or myth about preparing for college. – The statement inside the egg is something people may believe and these beliefs can hold them back from attending college

Small Group Discussion Group together with other students who have the same misconception. – Now, discuss and provide ideas to “crack” the myth – How could you overcome the myth? Record your ideas within your group

Class Discussion Were any of these myths or misconceptions ones that you came up with in the exercise at the beginning of class? – Which ones? Were any of them misconceptions you held before this class? – Which ones?

Class Discussion Who else needs to know about these myths and misconceptions? How can we share them with others? Think back to the beginning of class -what did you think when you were told you could or could not go to college? Who can help you find the truth about college?

Review - Misconceptions 1.I can’t afford college 2.I have to be a stellar athlete or student to get financial aid 3.Meeting high school graduation requirements will prepare me for college 4.Getting into college is the hardest part 5.Community colleges don’t have academic standards

Review- Misconceptions 6.It’s better to take easier classes in high school and get better grades. 7.My senior year in high school doesn’t matter 8.I don’t have to worry about my grades or the classes I take until sophomore year 9.I can’t start thinking about financial aid until I know where I’m going to college 10.I can take whatever classes I want when I get to college.
