Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs

Code of Practice First meeting: December 2010 Last meeting: January 2014 Over 3 years to complete 52 conference calls (95 hours) 11 meetings (21 days in Ottawa) 300 hours spent per CDC member in meetings

Code of Practice Sow Housing Through science and innovation, the Canadian pig industry is committed to full adoption of group housing designs / systems that offer more freedom of movement for sows.

Code of Practice Sow Housing For all holdings newly built or rebuilt or brought into use for the first time after July 1, 2014, mated gilts and sows must be housed in groups.

Code of Practice Sow Housing As of July 1, 2024, mated gilts and sows must be housed: in groups; or in individual pens; or in stalls, if they are provided with the opportunity to turn around or exercise periodically; or other means that allow greater freedom of movement*. *Note: Suitable options will be clarified by July 1, 2019.

Code of Practice Boar Housing Boars housed in stalls must be provided with opportunities for exercise at least 4 times per week. For all holdings newly built or brought into use for the first time after July 1, 2014, boars must be provided with sufficient space so that they can stand, turn around, and lie comfortably in a natural position. Suggested: 6’ x 10’

Code of Practice Enrichment Pigs must be provided with multiple forms of enrichment that aim to improve the welfare of the animals through the enhancement of their physical and social environments.

Code of Practice Herd Health Management A working relationship with a licensed veterinarian (VCPR) must be established. VCPR: Veterinary-Client-Patient-Relationship According to MVMA: A VCPR exists when your veterinarian has seen your animal(s) at least once in the past 12 months

Code of Practice Elective Husbandry Procedures Castration performed after 10 days of age must be done with anesthetic and analgesic… Tail docking of pigs over 7 days of age must be done with pain control [e.g. analgesic]. As of July 1, 2016, castration [and tail-docking] performed at any age must be done with analgesic to help control post-procedure pain.

PEDv Manitoba Update Canadian Border Services Agency sealing trucks returning from US swine farms However, trucks returning directly from US plants are not being sealed Tag-seals available free-of-charge from Manitoba Pork or at border crossings on return to Manitoba from the US Trucks must state where they are planning to wash in Manitoba and proceed directly there from border CFIA audits the paperwork; can issue fines for non-compliance

PEDv Take-Home Messages 1. The threat of PEDv will be around for awhile 2. Keep washing and disinfecting trailers returning from assembly yards, from the US, and from Ontario 3. Practice the best biosecurity possible on your farm 4. YOU control what comes on your yard and in your barn 5. This disease can be prevented
