Have you turned in your safety contract?

When conducting scientific investigation, what are “variables? -Independent variable -Dependent variable

Are your sources of information reliable? ?

Use your senses to make observations.

Name That Sound 7:42

Use your senses to observe the results. Are made with instruments such as rulers, balances, graduated cylinders, beakers, and thermometers. These results are measurable and use numbers.

Observation: the action or process of observing something or someone carefully or in order to gain information *Make 5 observations. *Write each of your observations. *Beside each observation, record the sense(s) you used to make the observation. *Write a prediction based on the observations you made. *What conclusion(s) can you draw based on your observations?

Inference: a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning Observations: 1.All the students brought their lunch to school. 2.It got dark outside at 12:00 noon. 3.Mr. Hearl called Iris to the office. 4.A siren was heard going by the school. Inferences:

or graduate (units)

Match the instrument with what it measures. 1.Mass: the amount of matter in a substance 2.Volume: the amount of space something occupies 3.Density: the quantity per unit volume, unit area, or unit length 4.Temperature 5.Distance 6. Time demonstration

Using A Graduated Cylinder to Measure Volume. 1.Make sure the graduate is on a level surface. 2. Read the bottom of the meniscus at eye level. 1.Sizes vary along with the increase of each mark.

How many ml does each mark represent? What is the volume of each liquid? 1 2

ml 6.6 ml Each mark represents 1 ml. Each mark represents.2 ml

How many ml does each mark represent? What is the volume of each liquid? What does this line represent?

How many ml does each mark represent? What is the volume of each liquid? ml 55 ml Each mark represents.2 ml. Each mark represents 1 ml. 4.6 ml 58 ml

What is the volume of the liquid in each graduate?

6.5 ml 37.5 ml32.5 ml 19.5 ml If the outside area of the liquid touches directly on graduated cylinder mark, the meniscus will be slightly lower.

What is the volume of the object? 1 2 object

What is the volume of the object? The volume of the water is 250 ml. The volume of the water and object is 300 ml. 300 – 250 = 50 ml The volume of the Object is 50 ml object

Measuring the Volume of a Regular Shape What is the volume of the rectangle? Volume = length x width x height

Density : the quantity per unit volume, unit area, or unit length To calculate density you divide the mass of your object by the volume. You can abbreviate your formula using the first letter. Use the image of heart to remember which Item is your numerator and your denominator. d =

1. Compare the volume of the substance in each cube. 2. Which box has the most dense substance? Explain your reasoning. Put the box numbers in order from most dense to least dense

1. Compare the volume of the substance in each cube. 2. Which box has the most dense substance? Explain your reasoning

Each of the containers below is a “closed system” meaning that no matter may escape from the container. The green circles represent molecules of water. If each of the containers is heated, how will this affect the “mass” of the water? How will heating the water affect its volume?

Heating substances (gases, water, etc.) make the molecules move farther apart meaning they take up more space. Since water was not added or removed, the mass (amount of matter) does not change

Why is the density of the substance in Case #3 more dense than that of the substance in Case #1?

Which is more dense, gold or silver? The density of substances can be used to identify them. Cube Measurement Activity
