Tell Your Story Photo by Todd Rosenberg for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago

Tell Your Story Connection What’s your organization’s core purpose? Mission Internally? Externally? How do you connect with that core purpose? Who needs to buy in to your work? Data What information do you have? What tools do you have?

Mission Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s core purpose is to bring artists, art and audiences together to enrich, engage, educate, transform and change lives through the experience of dance.

Mission Hubbard Street Dance Chicago is among the most original forces in contemporary dance. As one of the only professional dance companies to perform year-round, Hubbard Street is continually touring nationwide and internationally. Now in its 37th year, the main company has appeared in celebrated dance venues in 44 states and 19 countries.

Mission Hubbard Street’s Youth, Education, and Community Programs were formed in 1997 in order to offer movement-based arts experiences to students, teachers and families throughout the Chicago area, giving them opportunities to experience and participate in dance activities and to enhance their learning in other curricular areas. These programs, under the direction of Kathryn Humphreys, bring students into the world of dance by actively engaging them in perception, research, reflection and discussion, assisting them in strengthening basic proficiencies to develop analytical and abstract thinking, interpretation and problem-solving skills. Hubbard Street’s partnerships with schools provide teaching artists and educators the opportunity to plan, teach and learn together to create exciting and meaningful integrated curriculum which challenges students and takes learning to new levels. Hubbard Street also offers family workshops and youth dance programs through its community partnerships at locations throughout the city and at the Hubbard Street Dance Center.

Mission Hubbard Street’s Youth, Education, and Community Programs were formed in 1997 in order to offer dance education to students, teachers and families throughout the Chicago area and nationally where the company tours. These programs, under the direction of Kathryn Humphreys, bring students into the world of dance by actively engaging them in creation, performance, and reflection, assisting them in strengthening basic proficiencies to develop technical skills as performers and choreographers, as well as analytical and abstract thinking, interpretation and problem-solving skills. Hubbard Street continually refines this work through ongoing research, providing academic study and training in dance education, adaptive dance, and dance integration, for educators throughout the country. Hubbard Street’s studio programs and partnerships with schools and community partners provide teaching artists and educators the opportunity to plan, teach and learn together to create exciting and meaningful integrated curriculum which challenges students and takes learning to new levels. In addition to it’s work in schools, Hubbard Street also offers Adaptive Dance Programs and an extensive Youth Dance at the Hubbard Street Dance Center.

Audience Schools. Dance Transforms Lives. Hubbard Street’s Education & Community Programs utilize the choreographic process to assist students in strengthening analytical and abstract thinking, interpretation, and problem solving skills. We bring communities, schools, and families into the world of dance by actively engaging them in creation, performance, and reflection.

Audience Schools. Why Dance? Kinesthetic learning – dance education – provides a rich foundation for engaging students. Hubbard Street dance education residencies will meet and exceed expectations for student learning in concert with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) standards such as self-awareness, self- management, and decision-making; Common Core standards such as learning to read closely and making logical inferences; and the Core Arts standards of Create, Perform, Respond.

Audience Executive Staff & Board 24 classrooms 720 students students 120 new teachers 45 hours of professional development teachers 2000 residency hours 12 new partner schools partnership

Audience Staff, Board, Partners How do interdisciplinary teams of teachers grow professionally as they examine student level data? How does analysis of student level data inform teachers’ instructional decision -making to strengthen students’ interdisciplinary arts based learning?

Thank You! Kathryn Humphreys Director, Education, Youth, & Community Programs
