 What is Social Media?  forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos)

 Most Popular:  Facebook  MySpace  Twitter

 quickly share information about what’s happening in the world.  Purpose is to connect the world and make the world a smaller place  It allows information to travel quickly

 Different type of social media  Purpose is to connect professionals  Facebook for Work  If employers want to search information on employees they should check out references and their LinkedIn account  Facebook, Twitter, and/or MySpace are for socializing

1.129 billion total social media accounts!!!

 Invasion of privacy  No Freedom of Speech  No differentiation between PROFESSIONAL and PERSONAL lives  Does not always give a correct indication of what the employee is capable of  Individuals can differentiate between work and social life, but work wants to merge the two into one

 Current Employees  Get fired due to recent posts that the employer finds inappropriate  Get fired for speaking their opinions, while they are not on the job
