 1106-the Almoravid conquered Morocco  Included Algiers, or present day Algeria  Algeria was the capital of Ottoman Empire’s Algiers

 France began colonizing Algeria in 1830 by military force  French isolated Muslim population in rural areas  Kept them apart from France’s modern economy and infrastructure

 1830-France occupied and controlled Algerian ports  1848-France controlled all of Northern Algeria  Split into 3 “civil territories” (Algiers, Oran, and Constantine)  1870-Napoleon III gave citizenship to Jewish natives, angering the Muslim population

 Mersault’s indifference  French sentiment in Algeria  Unknown figure of a dead body  Political stranger of Muslims in colonial Algeria  Mersault kills an Arab  France used military force to suppress native Algerians

 Mersault used a gun against a knife  Algerian military resistance was no match for the French military  Emphasized on the dead French mother instead of the Arab who was shot 5 times  Discrimination in colonial Algeria
