The Fountain of Youth A Short Story by Justin Sadlemyer

Content Some of the larger topics I will cover are ; - The Setting - Character outline - How the characters changed - Brief plot summary

Plot Summary Hubert Cumberdale, a boy born with a disease that made him start his life with the body of a very elderly man. His life is immediately different and he finds himself different from all his other friends. This is the story of Hubert’s adventure to seek out the notorious Fountain of Youth to get a redo and possible live a normal life.

The Setting The story takes place in the small town of Williamsburg near the northern coasts of Canada. This town is not very modern and so are it’s people. The weather is turning much colder as the end of Autumn is very near and the season is changing into Winter.

Characters Hubert Cumberdale The main character of the story that is born with this mind boggling disease. His disease is the cause of his aged appearance at a very young age. When he was just a few years old he was quite the gentleman, along with being fun and just a little shy.

Characters Continued… Cheryl Cheryl is a very thankful, humorous and humble girl that is a close friend of Hubert’s. She is unlike all the others in the town that see Hubert as different or weird. She accepted him for who he was as a person instead of treating him like an outkast.

Characters Continued… Hubert's Mother Hubert’s mother has nursed the boy from birth and has tried to give him the normal life of all the other children in his town. She is quite the patient and understanding person as she has helped Hubert through some of his struggles in life. School Bullies The bullies consist of a group of three males that tease and pick on Hubert.

Character Changes Hubert It becomes very apparent at the end of the story that Hubert has changed. He has went from a Happy guy with a nice and positive outlook on life to becoming an emotional wreak that focuses on all the negative things that surround him. Cheryl When the story first started out Cheryl was a very humorous and outgoing person. Nearing the end of the story she is now very tense, awkward person to be around.

Favourite part of the story… “…With his sights set on the Fountain of Youth; the possible solution to all his problems. He sneaks out of the Barn during the night and seeks out any means of transportation. To his amazement he finds a bike leaning on a fence in seemingly perfect condition. As Hubert knows this is as good as it gets, he grabs hold of the bike and begins to head South out of Williamsburg with only one goal…to find the Fountain of Youth…”
