Conjunctions & Linking Adverbs English Connectors CONNECTORS/TIME SEQUENCERS CONNECTORS (ALTHOUGH,BUT,BECAUSE,SO) AND TIME SEQUENCERS (NEXT DAY,AFTER THAT,TWO MINUTES LATER)

CONNECTORS: BECAUSE,BUT,SO,ALTHOUGH U se “because” to express a reason (causa). “They were driving fast because she was in a hurry” Use “so” to express a result (resultado, consecuencia). So= así que, por lo que, por eso. “They were in a hurry, so she was driving fast” ”She was hungry so, she ate an apple”

But/Although U se “but” and “although” to show a contrast. But=pero Although= aunque. “Although” can be used at the beginning or in the middle of a sentence. Pronunciation although=/oldou/ “ She was very tired, but she coudn't sleep. “Although she was very tired, she couldn't sleep” She couldn't sleep although she was very tired.

TIME SEQUENCERS We use time sequencers to say when or in what order things happen. “ On our first date we went to the cinema. After that we started meeting every day”. “On Thursday I had an argument with my boss. Next day I decided to look for a new job”. “We sat down to eat. Two minutes later, the phone rang.” TIME SEQUENCERS We use “when” as a time sequencer and also to join two actions. “ I was watching tv when the telephone rang” “When I came out of the club, he was waiting for me” “The accident happened when I crossed the road”

To Compare and Contrast TIME SEQUENCERS Then/After that The most common ways of linking consecutive actions is with “then” or “after that”, but NOT with “after”. Eg. “I got up and got dressed. Then/after that I made a cup of coffee. NOT after I made a cup of coffee
