What is a physical property? Define Density Characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the matter’s identity Ex: color, odor, mass, & volume The amount of matter in a given space Density= mass _________ volume

How do we know if an object will sink or float in water? Knowing its DENSITY *If the density of the object is less than water, it will float. If the density of the object is greater than water, it will sink. Density of water= 1.00

Copy More Physical Properties Table on pg. 44 * Physical Property and Definition only

Use the chart on pg. 45 to determine which common substance is the most dense Pyrite or Silver? Helium or Oxygen? Lead or Mercury? Copper or Gold? Write Summary for notes

SUMMARY A physical property is a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the matter’s identity. Ex: mass, odor, color Density is the amount of matter in an object. We find density by D= mass/volume. An object floats in water if its density is less than 1.0 g/mL. An object sinks in water if its density is greater than 1.0 g/mL.
