Numbers 14: The L ORD said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.”

Numbers 14: In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.” 20 The L ORD replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked.

21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the L ORD fills the whole earth, 22 not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.

24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me whole- heartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. 25 Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.”

The Fear Factor Numbers 10:11 through 14 Fear often does two things that are rather unhelpful It freezes us in place It keeps us looking backwards It forces us to move forward

Numbers On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle of the Testimony. 12 Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran.

Complaints Selective memories Unrealistic expectations

Numbers 11 4 …“If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!”

Moses them complains to the Lord Why did you give me these people? I cannot do this alone anymore! How am I going to give them meat!

12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their forefathers?

13 Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now…

70 men are to be filled with the spirit of God to help Moses Moses is no longer completely alone in leading the people The Lord provides meat for the people Those who are so anxious to eat meat in the desert die

31 Now a wind went out from the L ORD and drove quail in from the sea. 33 But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it could be consumed, the anger of the L ORD burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.

The fear… There isn’t enough food There isn’t enough variety of food The new fear… Moses thinks he is in charge Can we really trust a man married to a foreigner

Numbers 12 Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. 2 “Has the L ORD spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” And the L ORD heard this.

9 The anger of the L ORD burned against them, and he left them. 10 When the cloud lifted from above the Tent, there stood Miriam—leprous, like snow.

Each time the Lord punishes those who complain or act out of fear or jealousy The next fear… Somewhat unexpected

Numbers 13 The L ORD said to Moses, 2 “Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders.” 6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb… 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea…

21 So they went up and explored the land… 27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit.

28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan.”

30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

It wasn’t just that ten men were fearful It was that those ten men spread the flame of fear throughout the camp

32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.

And we are back were we began… I wish we were in Egypt! Things were good and easy there! Don’t you remember when… Let’s return to the good old days

Numbers 14 2 “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert! 3 Why is the L ORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”

Joshua makes one last attempt God promised God will protect us God will give us victory

9 …Their protection is gone, but the L ORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them.” 10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning them.

How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them? 11 The L ORD said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.”

not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed 20 The L ORD replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the L ORD fills the whole earth, 22 not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times—

— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.

Like all the other times… Punishment followed 40 days of scouting the land 40 years of wander in the desert

and know what it is like to have me against you 34 For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’

40 Early the next morning they went up toward the high hill country. “We have sinned,” they said. “We will go up to the place the L ORD promised.” 41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the L ORD ’s command? This will not succeed! 42 Do not go up, because the L ORD is not with you.

45 Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.

Putting it all together We need to be careful about our complaining For the most part our complaining creates more problems We should seek to be problem solvers

Putting it all together We need to be careful not to be ruled by fear Fear, without our realizing it, often causes us to look back and romanticize the past We need to be forward thinkers

Putting it all together We need to be careful not to under- estimate God’s power We spend too much time thinking the worst, imagining failure and having negative conversations If God is asking us to attempt something new, God will provide

Putting it all together Fear kills dreams and future realities Fears keep us wandering in the desert instead of enjoying the promised land Fear is depletes us of energy, action, creativity and the vision of success

Fear is valuable when we are truly in a life and death situation Living in fear keeps us slaves to the past and separated from the Promised Land

125 years and counting Faithfully serving…
