CONTOUR LINES.
Key Q- How can a flat map show a 3D feature and its elevation?
Contour lines are lines drawn on a map connecting points of equal elevation, meaning if you physically followed a contour line, elevation would remain.
What is this? A flat map showing the elevation for one hill.

Contour Lines L.O: To describe the shape of the land on a map using contour lines. Starter: Brain warm up Six categories using the letter…

Key Words Spot Heights: The height of certain points on a map indicated by a one off specific number Above Sea Level (ASL): The distance in which land height is measured, with sea level being zero. Contour lines: Lines on a map that represent a certain height ASL. Lines generally 20 m apart however this is different on each map.

How would you describe the relief: 2. 1. 3. 4. 5. low hilly flat mountainous high

Spot heights explained

Choropleth example

Contour lines explained The closer together the lines, the steeper the slope. The further apart the lines, the more gentle the slope.

Complete Worksheet DO NOT WRITE ON THE WORKSHEET Complete the activities in your books.

Cross Sections We can use contour lines to draw a cross section of an area. A cross section is a profile view (side on) of the land to show the shape of the land. Bring contour lines to life, using a piece of paper and a topographic map.

How to do a cross section
