Aberfan Friday, 21 October 1966

In October 1966, a 10-year-old Welsh schoolgirl named Eryl Mai Jones woke up with a nightmare. "Mummy,” she said. "I dreamt I went to school and there was no school there. Something black had come down all over it.” On Friday, October 21, Eryl Mai went off as usual to Pantglas Junior School in the village of Aberfan.

On the hills around Aberfan were huge slag heaps. The Coal Board reckoned that, even if they became unsafe, people would have time to get away. Unknown to anyone, a spring in Tip No. 7 had turned the slag heap into liquid slurry. At 9:15 that morning, the tip gave way, and sludge and rocks hurtled at 30kph down towards the village below.

The avalanche swept down and engulfed the back of the school. One school boy remembered: “a big rumbling noise. … then I saw a big black mass of stuff. … A black wave of muck.”

The children had just returned to their classes after singing All Things Bright and Beautiful at assembly. One teacher was just about to take the register, when there was a terrifying rumbling noise, then silence. Aberfan became ‘the village that lost its children’.

Rescuers and parents grabbed shovels and rushed to the school. They worked all night, but it soon became clear that they would find no one alive. 144 people were killed, including 116 children and 5 teachers from the school. Eryl Mai Jones was one of the victims.
