GBIF Poland *** Current Status Piotr Tykarski University of Warsaw Polish GBIF Node EU GBIF NODES Meeting, Paris, 5.IV.2011

The Past Associated Member status since years of active participation One funding project – > records mobilised 27 Data Publishers, 90 datasets Centralised system – technical reasons TAPIRLink+ABCD

Geographical coverage of data hosted in Poland

Retrospective Summary Associated Member status since years of active participation One funding project – > records mobilised 27 Data Publishers, 90 datasets Centralised system – technical reasons TAPIRLink+ABCD Achieved more than could be expected from an associate member But much less than should be done Many data sources stay outside Partners and potential data publishers not deeply involved Reasons (selected): No cooperation or direct connections with other biodiversity-related European projects (through local partners): EDIT, Fauna Europaea, etc. No common interest or common scientific field = no long-term plans for active participation and developing databases

Progress Status in 2009: no more funds, many small databases Idea: create one big reliable source, useful for scientists, conservation and education –a tool for existing databases –expandable and growing system – stable source of data Chosen subject: insects –beetles, butterfiles, true bugs: ca species Result: success = funding Project „Biodiversity Map”

Achievements and plans Digitization of core bibliography sources –acquisistion of distribution data –solid scientific base Taxonomy databases and checklists as a backbone of the system Data portal –GIS server –species distribution, ecology, bibliography –links to GBIF resources Short-term goal: ca records

Questions to be solved How to link bibliography-derived datasets to GBIF? How to improve GBIF data citation system to encourage individuals/institutions to share data? Taxonomy improvement needed – lacking integration of existing taxonomy sources in the GBIF Portal

Thank you
