4 Extra ICT tasks and budget Software licenses ICT Courses / training Outsourcing of IT operation and maintenance, e.g. of network and servers (database, web) From a distributed database system model to a hybrid model, hence: Resources for potential Datawarehousing activities

5 DanBIF Organization Board Secretariat Member network of research institutions Affiliates

6 DanBIF Objectives Build a network of members - data providers and research network Facilitate creation of new research co-operations. Participate and collaborate with biodiversity networks and – programs Develop the current web-portal: http://www.danbif.dk Develop a Collections Metadata Repository Develop a unit-level dynamic “BIF”-tool Develop further the work plan to achieve these goals: –An actual research network –Digitization of collections –System architecture –Data visualisation (e.g. web-interface) –Outreach and Capacity building

7 DanBIF daily main tasks Workload and Staff size Administration! – (incl. travel planning and reporting) Network contact International collaborations, incl. NODES and ENBI Portal Content management

8 DanBIF Activities: Member network and research co-operations Network meeting 1: Introductory International conference on Biodiversity Informatics Network meeting 2: Kickoff for further activities Web-based revisions “allearter.dk” Other data providers, incl. amateur biologists Developing countries Network meeting 3 Conference on Molecular Biodiversity

9 DanBIF Activities Other network collaboration/participation –BioCASE - A Biological Collection Access Service for Europe – http://www.biocase.org/ –ENBI – European Network of Biodiversity Information http://www.enbi.info/ –(GBIF) - OCB - Outreach & capacity building –EuroCAT - http://sp2000europa.org/ –Participant Nodes Manager Committee of GBIF Advice on digitization to holders of Danish natural history collections Advice on database design and web-implementation

10 DanBIF Activities ZOPE - Node web-portal Online questionnaire for Collections Metadata Inventory Development of Collections Metadata repository and “BIF”-Tool Collection of unit-level databases, linking to the DanBIF portal

11 The ”BIF-tool” and the Metadata Repository Metadata Repository ”Collections Metadata Inventory ” Search Facility DanBIF portal ”BIF-Tool” Specimen Data Maintenance Administration GBIF Metadata Repository GBIF Portal Tool

12 Metadata Repository What is it? ”Collections Metadata Inventory” Experts List Major Taxons ListCollections List Search Facility Online Questionnaire Report Tool Geography

13 How this works… Organisation and Collection Manager Registration Description of collection Description of electronic archive

14 For what may we use it? - Metadata Repository Collection Management History of Collection Development Searchable archive that lists and provides an overview of Danish community of biodiversity researchers and collections Point of departure for making specimen level biodiversity data in Danish repositories accessible for search, query and analysis through an internet interface – “the BIF-Tool”.

15 DanBIF Thank you for your attention! Isabel Calabuig - DanBIF Node manager icalabuig@zmuc.ku.dk

16 The ”BIF-tool” and the Metadata Repository What is it How this works… Use of the Metadata Repository

17 GBIF – www.gbif.org - Global Biodiversity Information Facility An interoperable, distributed network of scientific biodiversity databases –Databases “affiliate” with GBIF Goal is to make the world’s scientific biodiversity data freely available to all Initially focus on species- and specimen- level data With links to molecular, genetic and ecosystems levels

18 GBIF CONTENTS & CONNECTIONS Content area responsibilities of GBIF Biodiversity Literature Databases Catalogue of Names of Known Organisms Biological Specimen Data Search Engines Data Access / Interoperability Existing responsibilities of other organizations CHM of CBD Sequence Data (GenBank, RNA, protein, etc.) Ecological Data Geospatial Data Ecosystems Data Climate Data

19 GBIF Organization Governing Board, meets 1-2 times/year Secretariat (at Zoological Museum, University of Copenhagen) - organizes, co-ordinates, inspires, Director (Jim Edwards) + 13 staff National nodes "Real work" mainly done decentrally

20 GBIF 4 + 2 program areas and corresponding sub-committees: DADI - Data access & database interoperability ECAT - Electronic catalogue of names of known organisms DIGIT - Digitization of natural history collection data OCB - Outreach & capacity building ICT Strategy NODES – Participant nodes committee
