Our Goals Today (1 min) By the end of class, you will be able to:  Define tone.  Identify and analyze tone in “Still I Rise.”  Identify and analyze tone in poems read in class so far this unit.

Part 1: Introducing Tone (10 min) -

Part 1: Historical T OR F (10 min)  In the early 1900s, it was believed that women suffered from “hysterical tendencies” because of their gender. The treatment was to lock them up in rooms for long periods of time, isolating them from other people.  TRUE.

Part 1: Historical T OR F (10 min) Susan B. Anthony, pictured below, tried to vote in the 1872 election from President and was fined $100 ($1,882 in today’s money!) TRUE. Women were not allowed to vote until 1920.

Part 1: Historical T OR F (10 min) There was once a law passed in Memphis, Tennessee stating that a woman was only allowed to drive a car as long as a man was in front of the car waving a red flag warning other people and cars. TRUE. Stereotype is still around, even though 80% of all fatal or “serious” car accidents in the US in 2007 were caused by men.

Part 1: Historical T OR F (10 min) According to recent studies by Bloomberg Business Week, Equalpay Tomorrow, and the US Bureau of Statistics, women currently make approximately 20% less on average than their male counterparts for the same job. TRUE. Many people think gaining equal pay for women is the next great step toward equality.

Still I Rise By Maya Angelou You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I'll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? 'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Just like moons and like suns, With the certainty of tides, Just like hopes springing high, Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops. Weakened by my soulful cries. Does my haughtiness offend you? Don't you take it awful hard 'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines Diggin' in my own back yard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I'll rise.

Out of the huts of history's shame I rise Up from a past that's rooted in pain I rise I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise.

Part 1: Class Analysis  What is the tone of this poem? Which of the following words would best fit the tone, and HOW do you know?  Defeated, pessimistic, somber, defiant.

Part 1: Class Analysis  What is the tone of this poem? Which of the following words would best fit the tone, and HOW do you know?

Part 2: Group Analysis With your group, answer your assigned question: 1.Who gets to “write” history? Why would they write “bitter, twisted lies” about the narrator? 2.What does the narrator mean when she says she “walks like she’s got oil wells pumping in her living room”? Why would that make someone angry? 3.What do the moon, the sun, and the tides ALWAYS do? Why is the narrator comparing herself to them? 4.Why would someone want to see the narrator “broken”? 5.Who might be offended or annoyed by this narrator’s attitude? 6.What does the narrator mean by “history’s shame” and “a past that’s rooted in pain”? 7.What is the narrator saying about her future?

Part 3: Exit Ticket (10 mins) Now that you have analyzed the poem, SYNTHESIZE the information to determine the OVERALL MEANING of “Still I Rise”—what is Maya Angelou’s message? How does the repetition of “I rise” influence the meaning? Make sure you use EVIDENCE (lines and examples) from the poem to prove your analysis is correct!

Vocabulary Review – 4 corners (10 min)  I will put up 4 vocabulary words onto the front board.  I will then describe one of the words using a definition, parts of speech, etc.  Walk to the corner of the room that corresponds to the word you think is correct.  RIGHT ANSWERS keep playing. WRONG ANSWERS sit down.  If you’re seated you’re SILENT. Make sure you choose quickly, and DON’T FOLLOW OTHERS!
