. Support for Humanitarian Programs On the Ground SUPPORTED THROUGH DFID BY

CDAC Goals Members aim to improve their two-way communications with affected communities by – Combining communications platforms for greater effect – Developing new responses, capturing lessons learned for improved communications practice – Promoting communications use within the humanitarian sector

Active CDAC Partners in Pakistan

National messages Local outreach Local feedback CDAC Support

Local and National Radio (Internews, BBC) Coordinated coverage of key issues Reinforce understandings, local and national engagement Support: Specialist production on specific themes Permanent audio files – for localized awareness-raising sessions, local outreach, etc.

Listener Groups Sustained local-level input, discussion, debate: awareness-raising Across local networks, & reinforced by radio programs On location: in camps, health care facilities, child-friendly spaces, etc. Broadcast or pre-record Feedback! – on general issues, on particular concerns Support: Training and Support for Listener Groups Radio distribution methods and monitoring

Local SMS Networks Based on RELATIONSHIPS; reinforce local dialogue Fast questions, fast alerts, fast awareness (use against rumors; for research; for notification of events; etc.) Feedback! Support: Training and installation of your local SMS platform (Frontline SMS, other) Protocols for SMS database use; maintain the relationship!

Community Events Community’s space, community’s terms, community’s words Jirgas, forums, panels, etc. Becoming radio programs and audio files: reinforce and re-use Feedback! Support: Planning and radio program production

Online Mapping (Ushahidi) Real-time updates Feedback!: facilities, trends, issues Support: Familiarization with Ushahidi systems and operation

Local Media Engagement Currently: lack connection, local information void. Engage with local issues! Manage the media relationship! Build contacts, get updates out fast Support: Facilitate or run local media events: journalist trainings, press conferences, familiarization events (funding needed) Localized SMS networks, through a trusted intermediary (Intermedia) Overcome the information void: provide data and updates, eg. via Press Clubs

Build your Audience! Feedback means: communication is ongoing, it builds awareness and promotes change You gain better trust and mutual understanding You have an audience which will know you and hear you: if things change, if there’s a crisis

Build your Audience! You get input directly into your programs: what’s working, what needs to adjust Your own outreach is faster, more connected, strengthened You have managed, collated, real-time feedback from the ground – which supports your national-level strategy as well It’s work! But it also works.

Information saves lives; dialogue supports dignity. CDAC’s role Planning, Training, Technology, and Direct Targeted Support
