WHEN do we use Formal Letters? When writing to organizations and people we don’t know. WHY do we use Formal Letters? (purpose) To request information. To apply for a job. To make a complaint.

STRUCTURE (Paragraph 1 )  Explain why you are writing (use fixed formal expressions) (Paragraph 2, 3, 4...)  Give information and /or ask questions. Use a new paragraph for each new topic (Remember to use polite, formal language) CLOSING  Finish with a suitable closing expression GREETING  Begin with a suitable formal greeting

Mild or strong language can be used depending on the feelings of the writer or the seriousness of the complaint, BUT abusive language must never be used
