Origin of the Metre It might sound improbable but it’s true! cm Just a few years after the French Revolution of 1789 the French Academy of Sciences defined the metre as 1/ of the distance between the North Pole and the Equator m What is the approximate distance around the Earth in km/miles? m = km 5/8 x = miles This line of longitude passed through Paris as did the Paris Meridian. In 1884 at a conference in Washington and with much French resistance, the Greenwich meridian was adopted as the world’s Prime Meridian. Today over 100 bronze medallions can be seen marking the original line through Paris.

It is better to try and remember/work out the relationships between these common units of distance but the table can be used if needed.

Units of Distance 1km = 1000 m 1 m = 100 cm 1 cm = 10 mm By looking at the three basic relationships above we can establish others. For instance: 1km = cm 1 m = 1000 mm 1mm = 1/10 cm 1 cm = 1/100 m 1m = 1/1000 km

Km to m Units of Distance 1km = 1000 m 1 m = 100 cm 1 cm = 10 mm 1km = cm 1 m = 1000 mm 1mm = 1/10 cm 1 cm = 1/100 m 1m = 1/1000 km Use these relationships to help you work out the following problems: London 5 km How many metres to London? m
