Origin of the meter Just a few years after the French Revolution of the French Academy of Sciences defined the meter as 1/ of the distance between the North Pole and the Equator. What is the approximate distance around the Earth in km/miles? m Today over 100 bronze medallions can be seen marking the original line through Paris. m = km 5/8 x = miles It might sound improbable but it’s true! In 1884 at a conference in Washington and with much French resistance, the Greenwich meridian was adopted as the world’s Prime Meridian.
