 A literary symbol is a concrete thing that stands for an abstract idea.  A symbol is anything that stands for something besides itself.  What are examples of symbols from literary works we know about?

 A motif is a reoccurring element that has a symbolic meaning.  A motif is a symbol that is repeated in a literary work.  What are some examples of motifs from literary works that we know about?

 Good readers trace (keep track of) motifs throughout a work and record their observations.  Record observations about the following:  How is the motif used to tell the story?  How does the motif affect the plot and characters?  Readers can use this info. to understand the deeper meaning of the motif, and what it means as a symbol.

 You will work together as a group to keep track of your assigned motif.  You will meet each day in class to discuss your observations and commentary about your motif, and record this on your “Diary.”  Read the “Project Responsibilities” carefully!
