First Degrees - percentage of first class and upper second degrees: Year University of Wolverhampton Total EnglandTotal UK 2011/ / / UW Institutional Key Performance Indicator:

OBJECTIVE 2: Increase the proportion of BAME students awarded first class or upper second class degrees (classified as “good” degrees). Year Both modes good degrees Part time good degrees Full time good degrees 2011/12BAME White Gap /13BAME White Gap /14BAME White Gap

The on-going work of the What Works Project – lead by Dr Debra Cureton – including outcomes from the University Belongingness Study. The promotion of a “Positive Role Models” Campaign across the University. The appointment of 20 new Graduate Teaching Assistants ( ) to support attainment – particularly at Level 4. With a further 20 appointments to be made for the new academic year Implemented Anonymous Submission of all written assignments. On-going work to achieve 100% accreditation of all academic staff by the Higher Education Academy. Embedding strategies for “better” assignment briefs and assessment unpacking through the work of the Faculty Attainment Champions …

The Attainment Champions Group reported in January 2015 that it had:  Consolidated its membership – each faculty has a dedicated attainment champion.  Attempted to identify on-going research within the faculties that that the attainment champions could draw upon.  Undertaken a mass/ university level data analysis to identify institutional themes that contribute to the attainment gap.  Considered the output of the SU/What Works BME Attainment Summit and the application of these to each faculty.  Agreed a new meeting structure: The Attainment Champion’s Group will meet 4 times a year and will hold 2 Open Staff Attainment Forums where staff can discuss their ideas and share best practice.  Agreed to resubmit Faculty Attainment Plans to OVC in May ‘15 as part of the Annual Planning round.  Invited the University of Derby’s Student Attainment Project to their January meeting to discuss their work and share their best practice (the University of Derby has reduced their attainment gap from 28% to 14.4% in two years)

“The closely aligned range of strategies and initiatives to raise aspirations and achievement at all stages of the student lifecycle is a feature of good practice”

This is good progress… But – there is still more work to do! Year Both modes good degrees Part time good degrees Full time good degrees 2011/12BAME White Gap /13BAME White Gap /14BAME White Gap
