2 2 TYPES OF AUDIENCES:  Entertainment and secondary target audiences:  These people are just looking for an entertaining movie, that has good sci-fi elements and a solid plot. These people will mainly be young teens and very few young adults, from about /16 and will not typically be interested in the deeper and more intellectual elements of the film. Instead they are just enjoying the movie for what it is and not delving into the social issues and ideology the film presents.  Main target audience:  This audience will still look for the entertainment  factor and the good things you want in a movie, but will  also be interested in the social issues, themes and  societies shown in the film. They’re interested in more  than a good film, they’re going to break it down and  discuss aspects of the influences, ideas and details  that are between the lines. Older teens (16 – 19) to adults  (40s and 50s) will make up this demographic.

3 SOCIAL ISSUES IN GATTACA & EFFECTS ON MAIN AUDIENCE  Social issues:  The main issues explored in Gattaca are genetic engineering, discrimination and society control.  Effect and purpose on audience:  The issues spark interest in the main audience and make them question their points of view or actively discuss it. The societies and ideas in Gattaca and dystopian/sci-fi films in general are designed to expand social issues in current society, to scare the audience into thinking this will be a likely outcome. Many people have said, when discussing the issue of genetic engineering in Gattaca, that it is a bad thing and is messing with what isn’t broken. These issues are put into the film specifically to make the audience consider it and stop what might happen.

4 RELATION TO TODAYS SOCIETY  The issues of genetic engineering and discrimination are used in Gattaca as they are common and relative issues in todays society. The director chose these issues and expanded them. Back when Gattaca was released these issues were very little, genetic engineering was just beginning and discrimination was a recent memory, but in modern society the effects seen in the film are becoming more likely. We already have genetically engineered animals and cloning, meaning the society in Gattaca could become reality. This is common doctrine in dystopian/sci-fi films and is evident in Gattaca. We can hope, that having these films to warn us as an audience will help deter and stop these extreme scenarios from happening in the future.

5 Overall consensus and reviews of Gattaca  Despite not being a huge box office success, Gattaca received mainly positive and favourable reviews from critics and the general public. It’s been described as “smart” and “ideologically provocative”. Also Gattaca sparked debate between the public and the scientific community over genetic engineering and similar topics. It obviously succeeded in reaching its market audience of those interested in questions about science and its impacts on society.
