Socrative – cutting edge pedagogy or indulging in trivia? Dr Sam Pryke, Sociology

What is Socrative? A teacher web platform and student app on smart phone or tablet that allows for swift and efficient questions and answers. ‘A classroom tool for visualizing and measuring student understanding in real time’.

A quiz?!

The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. More specifically, formative assessments: help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work help faculty recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately Formative assessments are generally low stakes, which means that they have low or no point value.

Quizzes and memorymemory Implicit memory Emotion and memory

In general terms do you think Socrative added something to lectures?

If you answered Yes did you do so because you thought it was just a little light relief from lectures or was it something that genuinely added to the module and contributed to your knowledge of the subject?

Would you have liked more use of Socrative in this module and other modules?

Students like Socrative! ‘I think it’s be a good way of either finishing up the lecture with a recap of the essential points you have gone over. Or, as a way of recapping last weeks lecture at the start’. Recapping. Enjoyed the app, offered a lot more to lectures and kept you more interested. Also gave me confidence as it showed me how much I actually knew! Interest, self confidence.

Students like Socrative! Broke up the lecture and allowed students to interact with one another as well as their tutor. Interaction. I would have liked to of had Socrative in more of my modules, and if there was a leaderboard option to add a competitive twist (in good nature) between students, perhaps it could add even more. Competition. I really enjoyed Socrative and it was a different style of teaching that I haven't experienced before. Non-traditional teaching.

Final thoughts 1. Not a If you can’t beat em, join em in the age of the mobile. 2. Not an IT Dead Poets Society gimmick. 3. Particularly useful for large teaching groups, lecture theatres. 4. Time consuming to prepare interesting and searching quizzes. 5. Time consuming to use.

Any questions?
