Program Objectives  To create a strong sense of community that promotes positive social interaction among adults and students.  To establish positive support systems for all students.  To teach, practice, and provide feedback on positive social skills.  To reinforce the culture of the classroom/school and ensure that all students realize what is expected of them and what they can expect from the staff.

Defining Success Success is having and using the skills necessary to overcome obstacles that get in the way of achieving goals.

Curriculum Units Effective Groups. Students learn and practice the skills needed for working effectively with others in different work settings. Anger Management. A cognitive approach to managing anger and frustration by teaching students to reframe their anger and use it as a positive force in their lives.

Curriculum Units Communication Skills. The cornerstone of The Discovery Program, this unit is based on the communication modes identified in Transactional Analysis: adult, parent, child. Students master this unit through extensive role-playing.

Curriculum Units Assertiveness Training. A logical extension to communication skills training, students learn to recognize the difference between passive, aggressive, and assertive interaction styles.

Curriculum Units Conflict Resolution. Using the skills learned in the communication, assertiveness training, and problem solving units, students are taught a systematic way of dealing with conflict in a positive and constructive manner.

Curriculum Units Problem Solving. Emphasizes the importance of taking a problem solving approach to life’s obstacles and outlines a systematic problem solving protocol that students are expected to use as part of their participation in the school culture.
